This could be huge news for our region. CSN is reporting that their sources within Canadian Soccer Association are telling them that the region will get an extra bid into the next World Cup in 2014.

Several sources within the CSA have told Canadian Soccer News that FIFA has awarded CONCACAF a full fourth spot for the 2014 World Cup. The extra spot Africa had for 2010 will be distributed to CONCACAF and South America.

The spots are said to be: Africa 4.5, South America 4.5 plus Brazil, Asia 4.5, Europe 13, Oceania 0.5,
And CONCACAF 4.

The announcement is set to be made later this week from FIFA on this matter. Should it come true it could mean good things for the region. In all honesty CONCACAF is rather lucky to be getting an extra slot into the tournament considering how poorly most teams have done in the tournament in recent World Cups. It will be interesting to see which “wild-card” pairing take place this time around with Africa, South America, Oceania and Asia all getting that half-bid. An African-South American matchup could be interesting.

My guess is they will go Africa/Asia and South America/Oceania.

  • I don’t see an africa/asia playoff because of certain unfortunate reasons. So if it does happen it will be asia – Oceania , South America – North America for me. E 13 SA 4.5 NA 3.5 AS 4.5 AF 4 O 0.1

i don’t really think CONCACAF deserve another spot. Once your past Mexico & USA, only 1 or 2 of the rest seem competitive at any one time. A fairer system might go as follows. Europe 11 + (4 play-off places); SA 3 (2); Africa 4 (2); Asia 3 (3); Oc 0 (1); Concacaf 3 (2).
At least an extra Concacaf nation would get a crack against a OS big name!
    I’d suggest Asia 4th vs Oc 1st, Europe 12-15 Vs Con 4/As 6/Af 6/SA 5, SA 4 vs Con 5, Af 5 vs As 5.
