Dynamo To (Finally) Put Shovels In The Dirt

The dream is finally becoming a reality in Houston. Shovels will go into the ground this weekend on a brand new stadium that will become the new home of the Houston Dynamo. The Dynamo have been working long and hard on getting this project to become a reality after leaving San Jose for the reasons of not being able to land a stadium. Better late than never I suppose.

Yesterday the Houston City Council unanimously approved the Tax Increment Revenue Zone (TIRZ), clearing the final hurdle for the Dynamo to begin construction on their new home.

The stadium will rival other new stadiums around the league. Even though in Texas heat is an issue at times during the season the Dynamo Stadium will be open air but unlike Pizza Hut Park in Dallas the fans will at least have some shade around the stadium. The look and design of this stadium has a very European feel to it but with an American twist which is good to see. The bowl of the stadium will be completely enclosed.

Its great news for Houston and MLS of course. The new home for the Dynamo brings the running total of teams without quality homes down to three. San Jose, New England and of course D.C. United are all still left with venues that most around the league would like to see go away. At least for the Quakes situation a real stadium is at least close to being in the works while the other two have little to go on at the moment. (Sure you could throw Vancouver into that mix with their two stadiums this year but they’ll get their own SSS before long and until then BC Place is a fine enough venue for them)

Its still amazing to think that we are only a few years out of a league that only had a couple SSS venues. Also it is amazing to think that venus like Crew Stadium will be outdated before long. That my friends is a sign of progression in this league.

To those in Houston, I’m sure this stadium will be worth the wait. Based on the preliminary renderings shown on the league’s website (pictured below), and the stadium porn released today, the venue will certainly be a good one.

What do you all make of the new stadium? Let’s hear it.
