- Alvaro Saborio
Real Salt Lake striker Alvaro Saborio was a beast this season for the 2009 MLS Cup Champions. He was brought in to take over for the departing Yura Movsisyan and he did not disappoint. His 12 goals were enough to beat out New York’s Thierry Henry and Joel Lindpere for the league’s Newcomer of the Year award.
He was a pivotal part of the success RSL saw in 2010 both in league play and in the CONCACAF Champions League. He added six goals in CCL play to help lead RSL to the top spot in their group.
To me this award was always down to Saborio and Lindpere with Kansas City’s pair of newcomers (Ryan Smith and Jimmy Nielsen) following behind. Lindpere played in more games but his role seemed to become less important with the club once they added Rafa Marquez to the midfield and Henry to the attack. Had one or both not come over this season I’d imagine Lindpere would have taken this award.
What do you make of Saborio winning this award?
