Color me surprised by the quarterfinal draw in the CONCACAF Champions League. On one side of the bracket you have all four Mexican teams, the other you have two MLS sides that will face one another. Yes it was a strange draw but both Real Salt Lake and Columbus will avoid a meeting with a Mexican side until at least the final of the tournament but will meet in the quarterfinals in February.
The winner will play either CD Olimpia or Deportivo Saprissa. Not a bad draw for either MLS side.
Here are the quarterfinal match-ups:
Monterrey vs. Toluca, Santos Laguna vs. Cruz Azul
Real Salt Lake vs. Columbus Crew, CD Olimpia vs. Deportivo Saprissa
The quarterfinals begin with the first legs being played on February 22-24, with the return legs being played on March 15-17. Columbus will play host to RSL on the opening week of the quarterfinals.
Mexican clubs could cry foul on this draw but really the two MLS teams won’t be in full season mode at that point so its really a non-issue I believe.
