Going into last night’s two CONCACAF Champions League games for the Columbus Crew and Toronto FC I’ll admit I was expecting more of the same for MLS clubs against their FMF counterparts. But something good did come of it, Columbus got a late goal to win at home over Santos Laguna and Toronto pulled a big time road draw against Cruz Azul.

Columbus is now in first place in Group B while Toronto’s draw keeps them alive just a little longer in Group A.

Maybe what was even more impressive about Toronto’s draw was the fact that they sat several regulars, including goalkeeper Stefan Frei and Dwayne DeRosario, and were still able to shut down a very tough Cruz Azul attack.

Its not every night that two MLS clubs can go nearly two-for-two against teams from Mexico. I know one result was a draw but it was in Mexico which should be cause for a little celebration considering it was someone like Toronto who have had a rough few weeks lately.

Below are the highlights to the two games.

Columbus 1 – 0 Santos Laguna

Toronto 0 – 0 Cruz Azul
