I’ve had it marked for a few days now but the league offices finally came on board today and announce the LA Galaxy have clinched a spot in the playoffs for this year. After their 2-1 win over D.C. United last weekend the Galaxy saw themselves at 50 points on the year, enough to easily ensure them a place in the post-season dance.

Others are close to joining them while one club is close to joining D.C. on that eliminated area.

With five weeks left in the regular season, 14 teams are vying for seven remaining playoff spots. Two more teams can clinch berths this week:

Columbus Crew will clinch a playoff spot IF:

  • Columbus defeats New England on Saturday AND
    • Kansas City loses to either Houston (Wednesday) or FC Dallas (Saturday) AND
    • Seattle loses to Chicago (Saturday)

Real Salt Lake will clinch a playoff spot IF:

  • Real Salt Lake defeat Colorado on Saturday

Real Salt Lake will clinch a playoff spot IF:

  • Real Salt Lake tie Colorado AND
    • Kansas City loses to either Houston (Wednesday) OR FC Dallas (Saturday) AND
    • Seattle loses to Chicago (Saturday)

New York and FC Dallas are close to joining RSL and Columbus here.

Colorado, Seattle and San Jose are battling it out with Kansas City, Toronto and Chicago for those final three playoff spots.

With the loss in LA, D.C. United was the first team eliminated from postseason contention. One other team can be eliminated this week:

Houston Dynamo will be eliminated IF:

  • Houston loses to Kansas City (Wednesday) OR D.C. United (Saturday) AND
    • Colorado defeats Real Salt Lake (Saturday) AND
    • San Jose defeats Toronto (Saturday) AND
    • Seattle defeats Chicago (Saturday)

You can nearly add New England, Philadelphia and Chivas USA to this mix as well.
