- Designated Player, Erik Soler, Patrick Vieira, Thierry Henry
This should be a fun week. The hints have been there for weeks, hell maybe even months or years depending on who you talk to. According to multiple reports French star Thierry Henry is set to be introduced by the New York Red Bulls at Red Bull Arena on Thursday July 15th at 1:15pm ET.
Though the club remains a bit secretive about who this big signing is this week, we all know its Henry. Its possibly an even more worst kept secret than the signing of David Beckham a few years ago.
New York Sporting Director Erik Soler also told the media yesterday that the club is also close to signing a 3rd Designated Player.
“There’s one player coming first, but I said before the World Cup that I think it’s going to be two. I think it’s more than a 50-50 chance. We have gone far into the negotiations. We are more or less ready to sign,” said Soler.
Now this 3rd player is definitely a secret, and possibly a good one too. From what some are saying this third player will be a midfielder that can play multiple positions. But the more interesting thing about this 3rd DP is that it won’t be someone out of contract according to Soler.
Patrick Vieira maybe? Or a weird deal with Seattle for Freddie Ljungberg? I don’t buy the second one as much as the first but some folks say Ljungberg reuniting with Henry wouldn’t be a total shock considering the Red Bulls are coached by a Swede.
All we know is that this could be one heck of a week for the New York club and the league. Its going to be fun, that much is for sure.
