- CONCACAF Champions League
The 2010/11 version of the CONCACAF Champions League is a little more clear today as the draw was conducted in New York to determine some preliminary games as well as who would be in what group. The Major League Soccer clubs involved saw their draw and for one club that draw could be deadly.
Out of the four American MLS sides involved (Toronto FC is likely to qualify through the Canadian Cup with the way things are going) we’ll see a couple new clubs to the tournament with Seattle Sounders FC, Real Salt Lake and the LA Galaxy joining the only returning MLS side in the Columbus Crew.
Columbus and Salt Lake were placed in their groups as they won’t have to go through any preliminary games due to the Crew winning the Supporter’s Shield last season and RSL winning the MLS Cup.
Seattle gets a tough task if they get past their preliminary games. Their potential group includes Monterrey of Mexico and the always tough Saprissa from Costa Rica. The Sounders could also see Marathon of Honduras making this the likely “Group of Death”.
Should Toronto make it through and beat Honduran side Motagua they’ll be in RSL’s group. That group won’t be a cake walk either if Cruz Azul ends up winning their preliminary games.
LA opens up their tournament with a preliminary round with USSF Division II’s Puerto Rico Islanders. That should be a fun one to watch as the USSF/USL/NASL-MLS matches are always worth noting.
The tournament will begin July 27-29 with the first leg of the Preliminary Round and the second leg a week later. The winners will advance to the Group Stage, the first round is set for August 17-19.
