Is It Time To Talk Buddle For USMNT?

Could Edson Buddle work his way into the national team picture? (Getty Images)

In one night we possibly saw a big swing in the US Men’s National team striker pool. On one hand we had Brian Ching who looked to be a possible player for Bob Bradley’s World Cup squad later this year go down to a hamstring injury that could keep him out for several weeks. On the other hand is red-hot LA Galaxy striker Edson Buddle who bagged this third goal of the season last night.

But the question now comes, is it too little too late for Buddle to be in the discussion for the national team? He’s got a hot hand (or foot if you will) now but he’s never really been in the national team picture. Injuries and streaky play have played apart of it. He’s only had one senior team cap in his professional career and that was all the way back in 2003.

If he continues his scoring streak here though you have to at least consider him given the lack of depth at striker that US has here. If he’s hot and playing with the confidence we’re seeing right now he could be just the guy the US needs up top.

Too bad there aren’t any more friendlies before the Send Off series in a few weeks or Buddle could be someone worth a look like former MLSer Herculez Gomez.

So what do you think? Too late to consider Buddle here or does a hot streak merit some attention?

He's not ready. Edson's touch and decision making still need allot of work.

My friend and I were watching the game last night, and we were having this very discussion while watching him play. I believe that he has the size and power to be a good option for the US. Certainly looks more aware on the field then Findley or Casey. Touch is better too

Oh God no… he is definitely not ready. He scored twice last night thanks partly to Donovan, but I still don't feel he's very good. I've seen him play many times, and I'm a huge Galaxy fan. I just don't like him.

  • I liked your article very useful to me. I will come back and read the article again.

I have always been impressed with Buddle, even when he was at the low point of his career. Edson does not run around the pitch as a mad man. he is very precise in his finishing, he plays much like Heskey, of the England national team……..Give him a chance…… he is better than the clowns we have parading as strikers……..I simply dont understand coach bradley….. I dont know how he selects players…..I love the US national Team, but I cant wait for them to hire a real sooccer coach…..Go buddle go. score more goals.
