WPS: Sol Closing Up Shop

I don’t discuss a lot of women’s soccer on this site but when I do it is usually some fairly large news (though if you are interested in writing about the WPS contact me). Unfortunately that is the case today. Arguable the best club on and off the field, the LA Sol will be ceasing it’s operations tomorrow.

Seeing how the club lead the league in attendance and in the standings this news is pretty shocking to see. AEG who co-owned the club had been looking for a buyer for some time now after just a single season, while the other owners decided they did not have the proper resources to carry on their own.

Now its players will be released and played in a dispersal draft. Marta, the club and league’s top player will likely be sold to the highest bidder either in the WPS or outside of the league.

Rough news for the young league that showed a lot of promise in year one. From what it sounds like AEG had high expectations in this club and they were just not met in the first year. This is a big setback for the new women’s league, which is based on a MLS-model of slow spending.
