Only a couple more clubs left to preview here for the expansion draft. Now we turn our attention to a previous expansion club, one that has set the standard for all expansion clubs to come, the Seattle Sounders FC.

Sigi Schmid was able to do well with last year’s expansion draft picks but will he be lucky enough to not have someone selected from his roster this year? Let’s find out.

Protected Available Exempt
Osvaldo Alonso Terry Boss Steve Zakuani
Brad Evans Evan Brown
Leo Gonzalez Chris Eylander
Jhon Kennedy Hurtado Michael Fucito
Sebastien Le Toux
Taylor Graham
Patrick Ianni Stephen King
Kasey Keller Roger Levesque
Freddie Ljungberg Nate Jaqua
Fredy Montero Tyrone Marshall
Sanna Nyassi Lamar Neagle
James Riley Zach Scott
Nathan Sturgis
Peter Vagenas
Tyson Wahl

A couple names may jump out but I figure high contracts will be the reason why they may get exposed. Lots of folks from Seattle are saying Jaqua is a candidate to be exposed over say Nyassi or Le Toux because of Jaqua’s higher salary (he makes like $200k). I also went back and forth on Riley, Nyassi and Ianni.

A lot comes down again to whether or not they graduate GA contracts before the draft, if they don’t then both Riley and Ianni are going to be protected. Should Zakuani graduate from his GA contract then it gets tough. At that point I’d probably take Ianni over Riley but that could go either way. The only other that could sneak in is Marshall but I couldn’t figure out to to replace him with.

See anyone I totally missed on here? Let’s hear it.

You totally missed somebody. Jeff Parke. Seattle still owns his rights, hes from Philly, he didn't play with Seattle despite being selected in the expansion draft last year. We refused to pay him what he thought he deserved after he failed to get a contract in Europe due to doping concerns (it was over 200,000 and he made his demands AFTER we had Hurtado and Marshall) Philly will probably want his rights, remember he was the leader of the last strong defense RBNY ever had. I bet we will make a deal with Philly over him, kind of like the deal we made with Houston for Jaqua last year.

I can't imagine Seattle will protect Nyassi over Jaqua. Probably not even over Marshall, who just turned 35. If the decision were made not to protect Jaqua and Marshall, I think Seattle would be more likely to protect Roger Levesque than Sanna, since Roger has proven that he can perform under pressure. Also curious why you think Zakuani won't graduate from GA this year? Seattle fans would be thrilled if he didn't, but he's had a LOT of playing time this year, and from what I can see that seems to be the major factor they consider.

    • For Zakuani it's not a matter of I don't think he won't graduate because he definitely got the PT to do so. Its a matter of I'm not entirely sure when the league will graduate GA contracts here. He'll graduate from his GA contract this year no doubt its just a matter of when the league does it. I've heard they will do it before the draft next week and I've heard it will come at the end of this month. So who knows.

Just emailed Seattle GM Hanauer. He says DP is protected, PLUS 11 other players. So, take Ljungberg off the list…

Also, re: Jeff Parke…he isn't eligible for the expansion draft because he is not currently on the Sounders FC roster.

James Riley to Philly!! Before it is all said and done he will have played for every team in MLS.

The most ironic thing here, WV, is that among the people you list as exposed are five people whom the Sounders chose in last year's expansion draft! That shows the quality of the team Sigi Schmid produced.

Pretty much what I thought – obviously switch Zakuani for Nyassi if Steve graduates before the draft. If FL10 is indeed protected, we should protect Jaqua. Nyassi has pace, but he is still raw. Jaqua isn't getting any better, but we are already thin at FW. Marshall doesn't have too many years left – Ianni is much cheaper and played a very strong game vs. Houston. Riley improved over the course of the year and except for a knack for red cards, he's been solid. Vagenas & Sturgis (especially) have ridiculous contracts, so they aren't going anywhere. Wahl is apparently not under contract – I could see him getting taken since he was starting until Leo arrived.

back to the Jeff Parke possibility, we don't necessarily need to have him on our roster to use the fact that we have his rights. Maybe Philadelphia won't pick one of our players (5 teams wont have a player taken) because they make an agreement with the Sounders to release his rights to them, sort of like a trade. Remember Jeff Parke is a player that was about to graduate MLS and go to Europe until the whole drug test failure. Just hypothesizing.

    • And Parke is from the Philly area and went to Drexel…
