Isn't Julius James a PA kid? He might be a good pick for Philly if available. Although we know Olsen is a PA guy, I hope union goes for Devon McTavish instead.

I doubt DC would protect a goalkeeper, especially one that is out injured for quite some time and may not even survive a change of coach. The same can be said of Fred (and overpriced salary), while Moreno (at his current price) would be hard for even Nowak to select. I also see James being protected ahead of Burch, as James had a strong finish to the season while Burch did not.

So instead of Fred, Moreno, and Wicks, I see MacTavish, Jacobson, and possibly Vaughn being protected as DC looks to build a core around youth and MLS experience.

I'd be very surprised to see Fred protected. His inconsistency, salary, and age should have management looking for the fastest way to get him off the roster.

They would also be well advised to not protect Moreno. He is well-loved, and I certainly want him back, but at 35 with a significant price tag and no wheels left, burning a protection slot on him is bad business.

One of the replacements on the protected list would be James. The other slot could go to any of half a dozen different guys depending on management's vision for the upcoming season. Personally, I'd choose Barklage, who actually showed some potential before his injury.
