The 2009 expansion draft is only a week and a half away here. Today we move forward in our look at each club’s potential protection lists with DC United. The Black-and-Red are still without a head coach so don’t be shocked if somethings here could change depending on who takes over this club.
| Protected | Available | Exempt |
| Marc Burch | Ely Allen | |
| Fred | Brandon Barklage | |
| Dejan Jakovic | John DiRaimondo | |
| Jaime Moreno | Luciano Emilio | |
| Bryan Namoff | Christian Gomez | |
| Chris Pontius | David Habarugira | |
| Santino Quaranta | Andrew Jacobson | |
| Clyde Simms | Julius James | |
| Danny Szetela | Greg Janicki | |
| Rodney Wallace | Avery John | |
| Josh Wicks | Thabiso Khumalo | |
| Milos Kocic | ||
| Devon McTavish | ||
| Ange N’Silu | ||
| Ben Olsen | ||
| Tiyiselani Shipalane | ||
| Lawson Vaughn |
This is another fun team to figure out. Most figure both Pontius and Wallace will graduate the GA program based on the large amount of playing time they he had this season. Bigger questions come down to protecting young players over old veterans like Jamie Moreno, Christian Gomez , Ben Olsen, and Luciano Emilio.
Fred was also an interesting player to put a finger on here too because of the way he played down the stretch. More than likely this roster will be torn apart after this draft anyways. They’ll keep some key players and expect the high priced veterans to not be picked up.
See anyone I am completely off on here? Let’s hear it.
(Update: Thanks to Jason for informing me Pontius was not a GA player this year. Don’t know why I thought he was!)
