Expansion Draft List: Chivas USA

Who will Chivas protect this year? (Getty Images)
Yesterday we started our look at the expansion draft and who teams will and won’t protect for this month’s upcoming draft. The Philadelphia Union get ten players to pick from and this year will be as tough as any to predict who will stay and who will be left exposed.
Today I’m looking at Chivas USA, maybe one of the toughest teams to figure out for this process.
| Protected | Available | Exempt |
| Jonathan Bornstein | Justin Braun | |
| Maykel Galindo | Chukwudi Chijindu | |
| Sacha Kljestan | Jon Conway | |
| Michael Lahoud | Yamith Cuesta | |
| Eduardo Lillingston | Jim Curtin | |
| Gerson Mayen | Jorge Flores | |
| Paulo Nagamura | Kevin Harmse | |
| Jesus Padilla | Ante Jazic | |
| Shavar Thomas | Dan Kennedy | |
| Zach Thornton | Jesse Marsch | |
| Mariano Trujillo | Lance Parker | |
| Ante Razov | ||
| Maicon Santos | ||
| Marcelo Saragosa | ||
| Bojan Stepanovic | ||
| Claudio Suarez | ||
| Carey Talley | ||
| Sasha Victorine | ||
| Cesar Zamora |
Easily one of the hardest teams to figure out.
I went back and forth on a few guys, Padilla being one of them. I just can’t see them not protect him since he is on loan from the mothership. Mayen is also another guy I think they have to protect. He didn’t play a lot late in the year but early on I think he proved worthy of protection. Picking those guys I had to throw out someone like Marsch. As valuable as he is I just think they have some more pressing defensive players to protect, as well as some younger guys they have to protect no matter what (Kljestan, Bornstein).
Another question could be is do they need to protect Nagamura? I think so because of his leadership qualities.
See anyone I missed out on here? Let’s hear it.
