Some more tough news for San Jose Earthquake fans, your new stadium project is now getting put on hold. Earthquakes owner Lew Wolff has cooled off on a projected 2012 opening date for a new stadium for the club, citing lack of sponsor interest and financial delays.
Wolff says the club still needs $5 million in sponsorship to get project off the ground. And with only a small percentage of that in right now things aren’t looking well for Wolff and his group.
I know some have questioned whether or not the area can support a club but in all reality it really can in the right environment. But a stadium without any big bells and whistles won’t bring in the big money sponsors like at other parks around the league.
In all honesty it may be time for Wolff to just start ponying up some cash of his own or bring in another investor to help out to get this project rolling. Some have also said Wolff is upset over the number of season ticket sales but it can’t be easy to get good numbers when your current stadium only holds around 10,000 on a good day.
