- 2009/10 CCL, Evening Links and Thoughts, MLS Expansion
I’ve had another busy day around Dallas so the links are only a couple tonight. Thankfully we do have a good bit of soccer as the Galaxy and Fire kickoff in a little bit. Houston also has a match tonight but more on that in a moment. I have a couple thoughts on league expansion tonight, along with a great photojournalism link for those still wanting to see the craziness that was the US-Mexico game.
First up we will discuss the Dynamo’s CONCACAF Champions League match tonight.
Isidro Metapán – at – Houston Dynamo (8pm – delayed until 9 on FSC)
Houston opens up group play against a rather unknown El Salvadorian side. Dominic Kinnear’s bunch is no stranger to this competition as they finished second in the group stages last year. I expect Kinnear to send out a main squad tonight as they will look to build on what they started last year in reaching the quarterfinals. For MLS fans, most of us hope Houston shows up like Columbus did last night and takes care of business.
Expansion and How Much
I was asked earlier in the day about expansion in the league on Twitter and how many clubs the league should have. I’ve given that thought a lot of discussion before on here but here are some highlights of my thoughts on that. I see the league eventually getting to at least 24 clubs, if not 26. I’ve been back and forth on 24 or 26 clubs, more than likely we will see 24 when it is all said and done. Not to say that if things are right in this world we could see 30 but I know some of you hate that idea.
Furthermore I hope to never see the league go to divisions again, they did a three conference/division setup a while back and I thought it was part of the death sentence the two Florida teams. I know that wasn’t the reason but I think it did have something to do with it.
But back to the 24, I was also asked who are on my list as top cities for the league. I know Montreal is pretty much in and I think number 20 will either be St. Louis or maybe even New York if things come together there. For this sake I’ll say the Gateway City gets the nod finally. After that the other four I see are New York, Miami, San Antonio, and somewhere in the Raleigh/Durham/Greensboro region of North Carolina.
San Antonio was really the reason why I got into this discussion earlier. Jason Davis posted a thing on the yearly rumor of SA getting an expansion bid. While I think that town is a long way from getting into the league after burning them a few years back, I do see them as an excellent potential place to go down the road. Its a very big city with very little competition as far as professional sports go.
Again, some of it’s a pipe dream and fun for discussion and other things are just a hunch I have about the future.
We talked earlier today about Lew Wolff putting the San Jose stadium on the back burner for now due to lack of sponsorship dollars and what not. It put some thoughts out there and this one at Pitch Invasion was the best I saw. Is San Jose an expansion failure? Looking at it after two years it very well may be. I agree with one commenter earlier in the day on here that the club needs to do more with their image. They came back with the same old school soccer clip art logo and quite honestly it still looks a little lame.
Photojournalism at the Azteca
I honestly can’t get enough of the photos I’ve seen come out of the US-Mexico game from people who went. Here is another good one, with some interesting comments about the trip. Apparently this guy has traveled with the USMNT a bit recently so check out his photos from the Costa Rica match as well. All interesting and all really cool.
