We’ve been hearing about this deal for a few weeks now but today it became official. Today the Galaxy announced the signing of 25-year-old Trinidad and Tobago midfielder Chris Birchall. He will join the club effective July 15, the day the transfer window reopens. He will be eligible to play the next day against New York, which is also the first game back for David Beckham with the Galaxy.

“Chris is a player that I’ve tracked for a number of years,” Galaxy General Manager and Coach Bruce Arena said. “He is an experienced midfielder with good qualities on both sides of the ball who I feel he will be able to contribute immediately as we push for a playoff position.”

No word yet on who will be cut from the roster to make room for Birchall.

I said back in May that I liked this move for LA and today I still do. Birchall should fit right in with the style of MLS and with how the Galaxy play. He very well could be the difference for this club in terms of reaching the playoffs this season or not.

More from the Galaxy press release can be read here.

Probably won't cut anyone, and instead move Sean Franklin from the DL to the PUP list, which rules him out for the rest of the season, and allows the Galaxy to add one more senior roster player.

Never seen the guy play, but if everything I read is true, this is a great addition. LA needed help at CM, espeically a guy who can be a 2 way player. Plus at 25, he is relatively young for one of Bruce's additions. 🙂 (However the veteran players Arena has brought in are the ones who have given this team the toughness it now displays)

This a great move that fills a glaring need.
