Harmse Traded To Chivas

  • Kevin Harmse, Trades

Here’s a trade that went rather unmentioned yesterday. Toronto FC traded defender Kevin Harmse to Chivas USA in exchange for allocation money.

Toronto continues their summer clear out of their roster, making this the third forth player to be released or traded away. Harmse has a MLS home still unlike Johann Smith, Rohan Ricketts and Gregg Sutton who were released from their contracts earlier this month.

Chivas gets some defensive help in Harmse. While I’ve never been a huge fan of his play I do think going back to LA (he started his MLS career with the Galaxy) will be good for him. Not to mention getting away from playing full-time on turf. Chivas needs a boost and if Harmse can do even half of that it may be enough to bounce the Goats back here this summer.

Judging by the move I would imagine this move was made in light of Toronto signing Ali Gerba. I know they cleared the roster space for Gerba with the release of Ricketts but I would say getting the extra allocation money will help go for paying him.

Interesting trade, he was a Canadian too. All the best to him in LA.

Earlier this month, after releasing Greg Sutton, TFC released Johann Smith, so Kevin Harmes was actually the fourth player released, although Sutton was released and his spot was immediately filled by Nick Garcia.
Including the empty roster slot Toronto has carried all year, they now have four empty roster slots, with Ali Gerba coming in and filling one spot, and Jamie Smith probably filling another.
As a fan I am eager for them to fill the last two slots, even if they are just developmental or utility players, as the late summer fixture congestion combined with losing players to the Gold Cup is going to wreck havoc with the team once again.

Hey Drew, ya left Johann Smith off the list of recently released players. Considering that TFC only had 23 on the roster to start, released or traded 4 and signed 2 you have to figure Mo's in the middle of a major overhaul. Now he just has to fill the 3 open roster spots.

You're both right, I forgot about Smith (shows how much they used that guy!)

Gord, Jamie Smith isnt joining TFC, Aberdeen want him back after new management came in.
TFC's bench is looking a lot thinner, although O'Brien White was dressed and on the bench last night. TFC must know something we dont, and must be clearing room to bring someone else in once the international window opens.
