  • Drew Carey, Poor Marketing, Stupid Emails

You know it is bad when ticket reps say the club has no support. My buddy Ginge over at Ginge Talks the Footy has published an e-mail that was sent by a FC Dallas ticket rep. From what it sounded like the ticket rep pretty much throws the local support under the bus and then the next 10 cars behind it.

We certainly still care about and support FCD. As you can tell we have a major lack of support from local soccer fans. While we have (and are working on) programs that cater to the soccer fan, we also need promotions that reach the masses. Drew Carey has name recognition to the masses and may even be here this weekend. Although we open ourselves up for question when promoting non-fcd items, the glasses provide Seattle no advantage to the game and it will get make more locals aware of the FCD game.

The line in bold says it all. First of all the club sent this out due to people questioning why they were the club is promoting tomorrow’s game around Drew Carey and Seattle Sounders FC are coming to town instead of one of their own guys. Hell they are even offering free glasses to the first 10k and a round of Plinko at halftime.

Also I believe one of the supporter’s groups is doing a silent protest at tomorrow’s game as well. I kind of wish all supporter’s groups would follow suit because it would really show the front office how bad they are right now.

This shows the club continues to drop the ball at marketing this club and reaching out to the actual soccer fans in the area. They figure adding more boucy tents at the stage area for the little ones and giving out more stupid things at the gate draws the real fans. Well it doesn’t. I would be shocked if they get an attendance figure tomorrow over 7,000.

    The Rapids front office does the same thing. As opposed to looking inward and evaluating why their marketing isn't drawing in soccer fans, they blame the soccer fans and tell them they're not doing enough to support the club. They don't realize that a decade of ineptitude and poor marketing directed towards noobs doesn't create support. They want more but they don't know how to get it.

    For years, ever since its inception, the Galaxy treated the youth soccer clubs in the area with condescension. The attitude was, &quot;you're lucky to have us here.&quot; Now, the Galaxy is focusing on the &quot;VIP&quot; market; Home Depot Center even has a conspicuous &quot;VIP entrance&quot; and &quot;valet parking&quot;! Absurd! Everybody talks about Toronto and Seattle as boom downs (which they are) but nobody wants to talk about Dallas, Denver or other places where MLS is having a poor time.<br />
    <br />
    Perhaps this is the reason for rapid expansion. After all, markets like Seattle and Toronto and Philadelphia could compensate for the Dallases and Denvers of the league.

    This crap doesn't make me feel sad for FCD at all. <br />
    <br />
    Though I would love to see 20,000 packing PHP regularly (wouldn't EVERY MLS fan) but this kind of lame &quot;advertising&quot; is what makes MLS a weak draw to &quot;real&quot; soccer fans. Do you think Chelsea or Fulham has regular match giveaways? Or even Middlesbrough? Of course not!<br />
    <br />
    Sad.

    If you've ever lived in Dallas (I went to SMU) the weather is terrible from May through mid-September. The last thing you want to do in the DFW area is go sit exposed in the sun during a 90+-degree – 90% humidity day (unless your at the pool or a lake). And really; who wants to go hang out in Frisco? FC Dallas could have NBA quality marketing, and they still wouldn't be able to draw 20,000 as long as the league is a summer league.

    It's a crying shame people. I just hope the Union doesn't go through this the next couple of years here in the Philly area. What really bothers me is that FC Dallas has their own state of the art facility and don't draw shit. Houston Dynamo have a good, loyal fan base and we all hope the stadium plans go through this month so they can start playing in it first kick 2011, but at the moment, they have to put up with the dump Robertson Stadium. And don't get me started about the DC United situation, that really fires me up. The fact that the Nationals had their own ball park built by local taxpayers without a big deal for a team that is terrible and has no history or winning tradition compared to United who are the most successful club in this league, have a big fan base and are excellent in the community makes me sick. Petty little politicians who think our sport is a communist sport so why would they help with a new United facility.

    Dallas weather is expected to be full of severe thunderstorms on Saturday afternoon – improving by the evening. Severe weather, on top of everything else, will limit attendance. <br />
    <br />
    I don't really like the promo – but I'm a hardcore fan, which is NOT the target demographic. <br />
    <br />
    I think the demographic for the 'Drew Carey' promo is really the casual fan.

    Attendance is mainly due to the horrid results of the team and the economy. Let's not get all crazy and act like FCD hasn't drawn respectable crowd numbers in the past, because they have.

    Sorry Grad, but as long as the Texas Rangers are around (and averaging over 23,000) your argument doesn't hold much water.

    How about Fc Dallas puts up some roof cover and show more balls to the fans. Even the interliga in winter does better than Fc Dallas. MLS hot cities. any damn city should have roof covering to help the fan and make them cone back.

    Dallas fans are too good to drive out to Frisco and the team should have known that when they built the stadium up there. The weather is a terrible excuse. In Houston we call that an advantage and pray to the soccer Gods that it's 100 and 95% humidity.

  • Demko

    How would a &quot;silent protest&quot; from Dallas fans be any different from the usual at PHP?<br />
    <br />
    And what are they going to do with all the leftover DC glasses?
