Issues In Quake-Land

I think the statute of limitations has passed on Frank Yallop being a good coach. His teams have performed miserably since he left San Jose after 2003. His 2+ years in Canada were forgettable. He became the first Galaxy coach to miss the playoffs (and that club hasn't recovered). Now in 14 months at San Jose, he's had about 4 good weeks. Frankly, I'm not too impressed with how he's put together San Jose — he's got 4 good players, and all 4 are left wingers.

I'm actually one who also put faith in the Quakes this season to at least make the playoffs. I don't think Frank Yallop has lost it. No coach has done well with the Canadian national team because of the hierarchy of the CSA. As for his stints after that, in LA, well no need to explain the circus there. Now back in San Jose, last season was an expansion team and they almost took that last spot (as did every other team that didn't make the post season). I do agree with JM in that the squad seems a little unbalanced with Convey, Alvarez, Huckerby and I'm missing the other player who is a natural left winger. They do miss Lima, big time and of course injuries play a massive part. Give it time though, MLS is such a streaky league and like last season, every team will be in with a chance of making the playoffs until the final two weeks (yes even FC Dallas!). I'm not giving up on the Quakes yet…

Spot on, JM. There are too many similar players on this team. I know Yallop is the face of this team management wise, but I put more of the blame on Doyle. Outside of getting Huckerby, he hasn’t exactly wowed me with his GM abilities. The scary thing is, I see no long term depth for this team. They have had ZERO first round picks in their two years of existence, and quite frankly don’t seem too concerned about developing talent for the future. FCD, with all their issues, are at least trying to develop some younger players for the future. Honestly, it doesn’t look good for the Quakes.

I can tell you in two words what's wrong with the Quakes…Clarence Goodson. When they didn't sign him it would be a decision that will haunt them for 10 years. This guy is doing great in Europe. He was POY in his league in 2008 and got them promoted. This year he's ranked in the top 10 players league-wide in Norway and has multiple suitors from the Bundesliga calling for an August tranfser.<br />
He left over a few thousand dollars and I'm sure Doyle and Yallop would like a do-over.

I'm still a Quakes loyalist but I'd be remiss in not citing two bonehead decisions regarding my team this year: Failing to make Joe Cannon captain and letting Ronnie O'Brien get away. But the season's not over and I'm not counting them out—there's still time—WHO-HOOOO—GO QUAKES!!!!

Huckerby, Alvarez, Convey and Corrales are all at their best when played on the left wing. They should keep Huckerby (the best performer) and Corrales (the most flexible) and trade the other two.
