  • 2009 Week 8, MLS Power Rankings

Time to close another week here in Major League Soccer. Hard to believe we are nearly a third of the way through this season already. Anyways we had some movement this week in the rankings near the top and around the middle. Mostly one club jumped a bunch and caused everyone to get the bump down.

Team Rank (Last Week) Record (W-L-T) Comments
1 (1) 7-1-1 22 pts. Another game and another win. Now second all-time for best start to a season. Not to mention they have an impressive goal differential of +9 with only three goals against. Not bad folks, not bad.
2 (3) 4-2-2 14 pts. Should have been three points against LA but still finding ways not to lose when being a man-down is a positive thing to see.
3 (9) 3-2-2 11 pts. Four straight shutouts is good enough for me to realize this club needs a bump up in the rankings. Not the flashiest of clubs but damn they get the job done. They also haven’t lost in over a month now.
4 (2) 2-0-6 12 pts. Still unbeaten but still not winning.
5 (4) 3-1-5 14 pts. Still leading the east but not by much with Toronto and Chicago right there with them. Another late goal saves this club some points and a place in the standings on Saturday.
6 (5) 3-2-4 13 pts. Big week for TFC, got off to the right foot in the Canadian Cup followed by a draw that should have been a win in DC. This club does seem to have turned a corner here.
7 (6) 3-2-2 11 pts. Got bumped down due to Houston’s impressive form and their bye week. I’m curious to see if the open week did any good for this bunch.
8 (10) 1-2-5 8 pts. Defending still a bit of a concern but this club is starting to find their form here. Lucky for them they aren’t far from the top of the eastern pack.
9 (8) 3-4-1 10 pts. Picked a bad week to drop points at home and lose another game on the road. Starting to wonder if this club will ever even score on the road much less win on the road.
10 (7) 3-4-2 11 pts. Honestly, this club is good but just lacks the talent to really compete in a very tight eastern conference. To me they are just missing something.
11 (11) 2-2-3 9 pts. Big time draw for this bunch who were really in need of a pick-up. Still a ways away from doing anything great but still very much in the middle of things in the east.
12 (12) 1-1-6 9 pts. The Galaxy haven’t lost in six games but then again they haven’t exactly impressed many folks in the process. Still their young talent is proving to blend decently with their veterans.
13 (14) 2-5-2 8 pts. Let’s not get too excited about the win over San Jose. It was one crappy team beating up on another crappy team.
14 (13) 1-5-2 5 pts. This club continues to go backwards without Jason Hernandez stabalizing the defense and Darren Huckerby controlling the offense.
15 (15) 1-6-1 4 pts. Most people in Dallas just don’t get why Schellas Hyndman was even the choice for this club. Sad part is they are all stuck with him. If I only had a couple hundred million in the bank and could buy the club, the good that could be done with that club.

as a big dallas fan, i have to agree with you…lots of young talent, too much tinkering…tries to not lose so much that it seems impossible to just win a damn game.
