• 2009 Week 6, MLS Power Rankings

A lot of change going on this past week due to the amount of games. Movement all across the board though most of the top remained the same. The crap at the bottom continues to slightly move around but let’s be real honest about the bottom four or five clubs…they all mostly stink right now.

Feel free to post your thoughts below.

Team Rank (Last Week) Record (W-L-T) Comments
1 (1) 5-1-1 16 pts. Looked really bad on Wednesday in Toronto but really made up for it on Saturday. Biggest reason may be Zach Thornton’s play as of late. It’s been nothing short of MVP quality.
2 (2) 2-0-4 10 pts. Speaking of MVP-form, Brian McBride has played above and beyond what Chicago is asking him to. Thing is this club hasn’t won in a couple weeks, then again they haven’t lost yet this season.
3 (4) 4-2-0 12 pts. Getting Kasey Keller back was obviously a big boost but the fact that Sigi Schmid is finally figuring out what to do with guys like Steve Zakuani is really making a difference.
4 (6) 3-2-0 9 pts. I know I’ve been saying I wouldn’t bump them up any until they won on the road but anytime you beat someone as badly as RSL did this past week you have to give them some sort of push.
5 (8) 2-1-3 9 pts. The late push against New York wasn’t just a defensive miscue it was DC finally showing up and making a statement here this season. Chris Pontius is making a serious case for ROY honors, then again his fellow rookie Rodney Wallace isn’t too far behind him.
6 (11) 3-2-2 11 pts. Things turned on a dime for the Reds this past week with two straight home wins. They were much needed until John Carver decided to step down. Now the big test awaits this club. Still they lead the east right now.
7 (5) 3-3-1 10 pts. Hard to believe this club has turned things around so quickly here this past month. The loss in Toronto was a set back but this club has the talent in place to really make thing interesting in an eastern conference that is still very tight.
8 (3) 2-1-2 8 pts. First loss of the year was a big one. Injuries may have finally caught up with Steve Nicol’s young side. They just lacked the veteran leadership to get through that second half on Saturday.
9 (7) 2-2-2 8 pts. Not picking up three at home against the Galaxy is weird. Then again the fact that this club continually struggles at home is even weirder.
10 (9) 1-2-2 5 pts. Can you believe they are 11 points off the pace in the west right now? Sure they do have two games in hand but even once they make those up I doubt they will be any closer. Hopefully the week off got things in order for Dominic Kinnear’s bunch.
11 (10) 0-2-4 4 pts. Some hate that I even have this club this high. Honestly they’ve played better this year than their record dictates. Injuires are just sinking this club deeper and deeper by the week though.
12 (13) 1-3-2 5 pts. I thought at one point this was a playoff contending club but anymore they just look like another cellar dweller. At least this season they have some company out west.
13 (12) 1-4-2 5 pts. Honestly this club is just a mess. I think it is time to start having Juan Carlos Osorio on the coaching hot seat because his moves just aren’t paying off.
14 (15) 0-1-4 4 pts. At some point this club will have to win a game behind Landon Donovan. They aren’t losing games but they aren’t winning either.
15 (14) 1-4-1 4 pts. I really am starting to think that the Dallas front office just needs to hit the reset button on everything, coaching, GM, marketing, tickets…I really do mean everything.Thing about that is the club would probably still stink.

After pushing for DC United to move up the ranking, I'm not convinced they're top 5 worthy. Maybe near 7 would be more appropriate, but it's a nice gesture.
LA is going to find themselves in real trouble once Donovan turns his attention to the busy international calendar this summer. I know the league tried to reduce the number of games played during the Confederations Cup and Gold Cup, but there are still going to be games where the Galaxy are going to have to find a way to score goals without Donovan.

Maybe it'll be a blessing in disguise as several players will see more minutes before Donovan and Beckham rejoin the club.
As for Dallas. The team they put out for their Open Cup match against DC was pathetic. They really looked amateur. The score probably should have been 2-1, but the handball that lead to Dallas' penalty kick was merely a gift to a rather impotent attack (that couldn't even take advantage of the gift). At this point, they need to start looking for a new head coach because Philly likely won't wait long before getting the best candidate out there.

Ouch Drewby! It's not helping that most of my team's best guys are down with injuries, but as a whole they still have what it takes and need to consistently show it, I'll give you that. It's not as if like CAN'T do it because they definitely can, and they still have my support. :)
Gotta give it to him, how awesome is Kasey Keller? The man's fierce and worth every cent their paying him!

Does ANYBODY know why Dominic Kinnear was ejected from the SJ-Houston game last month?

FC Dallas is a victim of their own decision making. Rather than building a partnership with SMU or TCU for a soccer stadium, they decide to build a stadium in the middle of nowhere.
While there has been some more development around Frisco, people aren't going to spend their free time there if they have other alternatives.
FCD needed to be in upscale Dallas or downtown Fort Worth; not Frisco.
