  • 2009 Allocation List, Gregg Berhalter

Bruce Arena really is putting the old band back together out in LA. His latest addition is defender Gregg Berhalter. The club and league announced the signing today.

“Gregg is an experienced and knowledgeable defender who will be an excellent addition to our club,” Arena said. “He is a good passer and organizer of the defense and I believe that he will help improve our team in the defensive end of the field.”

The Galaxy used their top allocation spot to sign Berhalter. The 35-year-old defender will probably get slotted into a defense that is both young and old.

If healthy this could be a good signing for LA. Even at his age I think bringing a veteran defender on board never hurts at any time of the year, especially this early in the year. Some will probably hate on this signing but I have to admit it is nice to see him in the league and I really think it could pay off for the Galaxy. Yeah, call me crazy.

Sometimes you are crazy, but not on this one…you are dead on! Its a great signing. Berhalter is a solid vet who will bring experience, intelligence, work ethic, and leadership to a backline that could use all of them. He's not a flashy signing, but frankly, I am sick of the flashy signings. (You all know who I am talking about) This team needs blue collar guys who can help them win games, not pretty boys. He's not fast, and isn't a long term solution, but he can rotate with Sanneh, Gonzalez and Marshall to form a nice CB rotation, while the two youngsters develop. Nice pick up.

Berhalter is an unknown commody. He has spent his 15 years in Europe playing mainly in second divisions. This decade, he spent one year in the top flight (2001/02).<br />

I think there is a very good chance that Berhalter sucks donkey, and LAG will not improve.
