Colorado has signed up another defender for the 2009 season today. The club announced the addition of former Rochester Rhino defender Scott Palguta. The 26-year-old longest-tenured defender with the Rhinos.

“I know everybody is upset about the timing of this and the fact that I’m leaving, but at the same time I know that if it wasn’t for (Rhinos coach Darren Tilley and former coach Laurie Calloway) this opportunity wouldn’t have come around for me,” Palguta, 26, said. “Rochester prepared me for this.”

Palguta had been on trail with the Rapids over the past few days.

His contract is a one-year deal with an option for each of the next three seasons. He had a clause in the two-year contract he signed a few months ago with Rochester allowing him to sign with an MLS team before March 15.

What do you USL followers make of Palguta in MLS? A good move for him?

EDIT: Just talked to someone with the Rapids, this is not official…yet.

Good Move if he is reasonably priced.

Actually the Rapids have not sign Palguta yet, according to the response to an inquiry I sent to the Director of Media Relations yesterday. You'll notice that no Rapids rep is quoted in that article, just the player, and there's no announcement on the Rapids website or blog.

Scott is a solid player and a quality person.

Colorado assistant Steve Guppy knows him well spending the 2008 season with the Rhinos.

Palguta is actually the third Rhino that Guppy has tried to bring to Colorado this off season.

MLS low balled Rhinos 2008 ROTY Danny Earls (left MF/ left back) and CD Ross Smith was found to have a heart problem that requires the same surgery that Ronny Turiaf had before his rookie season with the LA Lakers.

Palguta is left footed and has played center back and left back both with the Rhinos and in Red Bulls camp.

NY was looking at him primarily as a center back this off season before letting him go.

The big question with Scott at left back will be whether he has enough pace to keep up with the speedier right wingers in MLS.

All in all, it's a quality signing for the Rapids and a sizable blow for the Rhinos.

A Rhino player told me that Rochester is refusing to sign the transfer. Apparently they think that if they drag this out past the 15th, Palguta will have to return to Rochester.

The Rhinos have a big hole to fill if Palguta is really going – and good for him as it's a great chance to move up – and I was wondering if anyone knew about the Rhinos striker Matt Delicate who signed for the MyFootballClub-owned Ebbsfleet United in England but has it seems left the squad. Is he going back to the Rhinos? MyFootballClub is the internet-based society that pooled its money and actually owns this non-league English club.
