Milan Wanting To Keep Beckham

Something most of us kind of figured would happen with David Beckham and his loan deal with AC Milan. The Italian powerhouse is moving toward making an offer to MLS to keep the English star.

Surprised? You shouldn’t be.

Milan is set to meet with Beckham’s people about buying his rights from MLS and reports suggest a £4.5 million transfer offer is already being floated around as an offer.

The biggest question is would the league, who desperately wanted Beckham to come here allow him to go that easily? With the current economic state I wouldn’t be shocked to see him go that easily if Milan can pony up enough dough to make the league think long and hard about it.

Apparently in Beckham’s contract he has an escape clause that would let him leave after the 2009 season.

Does MLS hold on to Beckham (even though he and his family probably want to leave LA for Italy…who could blame them too), or does it consider the more than $11 million in transfer fee and salary ($5 million) the club would add to its bottom line?

Its a lot to take in. If he clearly wants to stay in Milan I say let him go. Sure he has raised the profile of the league some here but I would argue he hasn’t done enough to draw in the average sports fan on a regular basis. It may be time to cut some losses (or just gain plenty back in transfer fees) and move forward. Its not like LA is going to win a MLS title here anytime soon with him anyways.

What do you all make of this current situation? I’m sure losing both Beckham and Landon Donovan will hur the Galaxy but it will also free up a big chunk of space that I know Bruce Arena could fill with quality players.
