Milan Wanting To Keep Beckham

I say let him go. I do differ with you a bit though, Drew, in that I think he served his purpose here. He was never going to make MLS a big time league by himself, but he did get plenty of casual fans in the door. <br />

Why would Beckham want to come back to a Galaxy team that's definitely in transition, that doesn't have the quality of players he's used to, that doesn't value him (Arena said toward the end of last year that the club had no leadership, an indictment of Beckham, Donovan and Klein) — and, most importantly, that he has lost respect for. Do you really think that if Beckham had any respect for the Galaxy or MLS that he (through his representatives) would negotiate *directly* w/Milan for his loan — and for his possible outright transfer?<br />

This falls right at the feet of Leiweke and Anschutz. Leiweke is the kind of man who will intimidate, throw people under the bus and apply unreasonable pressure to get what he wants, and Anschutz lets him get away with it. Morale is abyssmal at the Galaxy; that a big reason why Beckham and Donovan want out.<br />

If Beckham and Donovan leave, Leiweke should be fired. Getting Beckham was his idea and, outside of jersey sales, he blew it big time.

If I were DB, I would stay in Milan and play at a super club as long as he can. Before he retires, he can come back to MLS which will more than likely have more talented teams which will be to DB’s likings. It will be a finacial setback for LA Galaxy and MLS, but DB has helped the MLS financially and gained some exposure.

I like both the column and comments. There's a nice lack of some of the fury that is swarming around a situation that should just be settled in a way that could profit both parties. (Joe, I remember enjoying your comments on sideline views as well).

I have to admit it—I'd hate to see Becks go as I really respect the man. I'm thankful for what he's brought to the league, but wouldn't blame him for leaving after the disrespect he's been shown buy some due to their jealousy and bad manners. MLS players who've been nasty to him should have kept their big mouths shut and tried to learn from him. David's remained a gentleman throughout all of this and deserves better. Whatever he decides, I wish him well and look forward to the day he owns his own club here. No Skippy, you're not dreaming. <br />

Would the Galaxy realize that much return. Wouldn't the league hold a greater share of the transfer fee since the league holds all the contracts.
