  • 2009 MLS SuperDraft, Dema Kovalenko, Mike Magee, Trades

The Los Angeles Galaxy picked up a pair of players last night in deals that should help the club out in the coming season.

Real Salt Lake has trade Dema Kovalenko to the Galaxy for draft pick and some allocation money. The Galaxy also acquired forward Mike Magee from New York earlier in the day for a draft pick.

The Red Bulls picked up a second-round pick in the deal in today’s draft. No word yet what kind of pick RSL got out of this deal.

The Galaxy traded the rights to ‘retired’ defender Ty Harden to the Colorado Rapids for a third-round pick.  LA acquired the 35th overall pick in the draft for Harden’s rights.

I have to give it to Bruce Arena, sure the names aren’t flashy as some would possible like but he is addressing needs the club probably couldn’t address in today’s draft.

I'm hearing this isn't official and may or may not be a done deal, but it makes sense. I don't really see Dema as a starter for RSL in 2009, but LAG could really use his bite in a d-mid role to help them bring out a more defensive mentality. He's also a strong leader, and a very competitive person which helps on the practice field. Depending on the specifics could be a win-win for both teams.

This is what happens when you have adults like Bruce Arena running things instead of terminal adolescents like Alexi Lalas and Tim Leiweke. Arena knows how to manipulate a salary cap, how to evaluate talent and how to get that talent. Lalas was nothing but a p.r. blowhard. Leiweke might know about promoting and scheduling events but he knows squat about operating a team — and less than squat about dealing with people.<br />

The Galaxy will be a better team because of Kovalenko and Ricketts. They won't make the playoffs as they're currently constituted but they won't be the laughing stock they've been the past two seasons. They need a veteran central defender *desperately.*

As an RSL fan I am sad to see Dema leave Salt Lake. Kovalenko always took the time to shake your hand and show genuine appreciation for you being a fan if you ran into him away from the stadium. Even other players would treat you different when Dema was around. He was always pure class, and I wish him the best in LA (except when they play RSL, of course).
