Setting A Name In Philly

  • Philadelphia Union

I saw a link earlier on a Philly news site about naming the new expansion club, however minutes later it was taken down. I guess someone jumped the gun on the release. It happens but thankfully I did jot down the list of names (and later it looks like they were legit as SBI is talking about them).

  • AC Philadelphia
  • Philadelphia City
  • Philadelphia Union
  • Philadelphia SC

Interesting selection of names really if they are the final list. I’m sure most people will go for AC Philadelphia or Philadelphia City. I think any are a solid selection really though I think Union is my least favorite of the bunch. They may be too simple or plain for some but I think each is pretty solid.

Which one will you go for? Apparently voting will start soon.

When it comes to soccer, there is only one Philly i.e. the Big Phil i.e. Luiz Felipe Scolari.

All pretty bad in my opinion. SC and Union are the lesser of the evils.
There seems to be this school of thought that teams need to abandon any sort of given nickname and follow the conventional naming used in the rest of the world. But they completely ignore the fact that the rest of the world named the teams 100 years ago when they really were "clubs" and "associations". It had a meaning back then. Now it's just trendy.

I mean Associazione Calcio Philadelphia? It just sounds so desperate for a "Football" name to use the AC. AC basically means team. So it's basically naming them "Philadelphia Team" but putting it in Italian to make it sound like it's got a Football ring to it.

I'm not crazy about some of the nicknames but at least the MLS has (for the most part) used names that identify with the city.

And in other cases they've used names that are unique (there is only one Crew in american sports teams).

    • I think by AC they mean Athletic Club Philadelphia and not Associazione Calcio Philadelphia. But yeah I get what you’re saying Nick…I’m not overly thrilled with the selection either. I think they played it a bit too safe if you ask me.

Should have gone with Independence SC!

I think Sons Of Ben would be pretty bad ass! I dunno why they don't just go with that.

I like team names that don't sound corny, but aren't FC or AC or Real oriented. Among my faves:
-Bolton Wanderers
-Blackburn Rovers
-Columbus Crew
-Seattle Sounders
-Portland Timbers
-Charleston Battery
-Arsenal
-Miami FC Blues (there is an FC, but it has "blues"…so ya know…)
-Red Bull New York sounds cool when said that way, but when it's said "New York Red Bulls", it sound dumb.
-Chivas USA

I think the worst name in the MLS is, without a doubt, The Kansas City Wizards. I mean, holy hell, how corny can you get?

I thought Philadelphia Athletic would be nice. It would be a nod to the Athletics baseball team, and overall, has a great ring to it.

I like Philadelphia City. Union would be great as long as it's said "Union Philadelphia".

Man, I'm picky.

I like AC Philly because it pulls in the history of a former baseball team.
