- Designated Player
Good news for Toronto FC fans, your owners want to spend money on a Designated Player for next year. Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment Ltd. board of directors have given their stamp of approval to Toronto FC’s quest for a designated player today.
“We presented our plan for the 2009 season and they approved that plan,” Tom Anselmi MLSEL’s executive vice-president and chief operating officer said. “The board doesn’t get into approving every little piece but they approved what we asked for and included in that was a plan to sign a DP.”
Anselmi was also quick to say that they don’t want to rush into which player to sign as their first designated player.
“(The board’s) approval doesn’t mean we are going to go out and sign the first guy available,” he said.
“We are approaching it really cautiously. It’s not a guaranteed success. We have the resources and Mo has had a clear plan right from the start: Get the right guy at the right time at the right price. And it must make the team better.”
Basically they are looking at clubs with DPs right now (DC, LA) who failed to reach the playoffs and to a lesser degree a club like KC who made the playoffs with a DP but failed to reach the conference finals with one. Only New York and Chicago are seeing any sort of success with their respective DPs.
The report from the Toronto Sun also gave way some information about a DP the club is currently looking at, 25-year-old Canadian international Iain Hume, a top striker in the League Championship with Barnsley.
Hume is currently out injured and may not be ready to go for the start of next year.
I find it interesting that the club is looking at a guy like Hume. But in a way its a good thing that they are looking for high valued Canadians to play for their club and not just the next big name that walks in the door. I still believe at the end of the day they will sign a quality DP and not waste this slot on their roster. Mo Johnston has made some iffy calls so far after two years but I don’t see him messing this one up because his butt will be on the line with it.
Still the question will remain, is a DP really worth it? And who can Toronto get for their DP?
