Just a bit of a rumor news for you all this afternoon. While some people are talking about Bayern Munich midfielder Ze Roberto’s possible linking to FC Dallas and Seattle Sounders FC’s quest to land Deportivo Cali striker Freddy Montero, one other foreigner is also linked to a number of MLS clubs.
Former Barcelona defensive midfielder Gerard Lopez is linked to a couple different clubs.
The 29-year-old Gerard has bounced around from Spanish club to Spanish club over the years played a couple times for Valencia and once for Barcelona. Since 2000 he’s played for the Spanish national team six times and has scored twice.
He is now a free agent currently on trial with Sheffield United F.C and is in talks with a couple MLS clubs.
No word yet on who is interested in Gerard but guess is that a club like Chivas USA, Seattle Sounders FC, or a Toronto make sense for him. I could see him sign a hefty deal so that’s why Toronto makes a lot of sense to me as they will be out to spend a lot of money this off season. After the loss of Maurice Edu this summer, the Reds have had a big hole in their defensive midfield. Gerard should definitely help fill that need.
