WVHooligan - Soccer Blog

Sometimes I am amazed at how much information there is out there on this ol’ internet thing that we love to play on each day. The information all comes from various places like TV, radio, newspapers, blogs, etc.

Then sometimes there is that lack of media or lack of information that can be down right surprising. It all got me thinking today when I read this editorial from Mike over at Down the Byline.

See Mike is in a tough spot, his club (Kansas City Wizards) have probably the worst media following in the league. Every once and a while you get items from their local papers but you are more likely to get information about the club’s activity out of it’s team blog or one of the few fan blogs like Mike’s or Oz City.

Its a bit unfortunate for KC fans too because their club gets a bad rap from seemingly everyone around the league – not to mention a lot of people want them relocated to St. Louis or elsewhere. Why? Because of their coverage. We hardly hear a peep about the Wizards and so people have this out of sight out of mind theory about them so they think since all is quiet that they should be moved (plus their attendance over the years at Arrowhead gets to people but that is a crappy excuse anymore really).

Some cities coverage are definitely better than others, we all know that. It’s just sad on Kansas City’s part to see what’s going on with them take place. Here’s one thing that really struck me from Mike’s article:

“…all you have to do is look at last Thursday’s Wizards press conference. Having the day off of work, I attended the press conference, which while certainly not the only way to contact the team, is probably one of the easiest ways to ask questions of coach Onalfo. No one from the KC Star even attended the press conference, and the majority of the questions at the press conference were asked by Bob Rusert, of MLSnet.”

Sad reality but a true one at that.

It all got me thinking though, top to bottom who has the best coverage and the worst. If KC is the worst, then who is the best?

That is a toss up as we all know, it could be DC United because of people like Steve Goff; it could be New York because of Ives Galarcep; or could it be the two LA clubs because of Luis Bueno and Andrea Canales?

Its really a toss up and it all comes down to personal preference between those three.

But every other club has pretty solid coverage either on a newspaper front or elsewhere, from Chicago, Colorado, Columbus, Houston, New England, RSL, San Jose, or Toronto.

Then you have Dallas. Now I don’t want to come across like a homer but the club has excellent media coverage in the area thanks to the team’s blog (which has really set the standard in team media blogs in my eyes) and to sites like 3rdDegree (another standard in fan blogs for a team). Also the two local papers (Dallas Morning News and Fort Worth Star Telegram) do a great job in covering the team as well.

I think the media coverage of the league is improving here. Once Seattle and Philadephia enter the league there will be more coverage in terms of blogs and newspaper reports on their ends. Hell, I know Seattle is already pumping out MLS coverage with their papers and blogs (they are pumped to have a MLS club).

SO what do you all think of your club’s media coverage? As bad as KC? Or as good as clubs like Dallas and New York? Let’s hear it.

Columbus has had great coverage this year, I believe due in large part to grassroots fan support.
there are various fan blogs, the best of which being Crewture along with almost daily coverage in the Columbus Dispatch. I also agree that media coverage has grown these last two years something I find very exciting.

I am a Providence, RI based DC United fan. Though Gillette Stadium is just about equidistant from Boston and Providence, there is literally NO media coverage here whatsoever about the Revs. MLS Cup last year drew a 4 paragraph AP article. League games get mere mentions or boxscores. It’s pathetic really, and no wonder that most of the soccer fans in Rhode Island only pay attention to Europe (I don’t want to call them Eurosnobs, because of the horrible Revs coverage).

But the worst thing is that this is supposedly New England’s (all six states) team, but only Boston gets the coverage and promoting. Whereas the Patriots, Celtics, Bruins, and Red Sox fill up the paper on a daily basis (Patriots coverage lasts from May-February year round), the Revs hardly can get a game review. As much as I hate that team, I pity them, because of the poor marketing.

It also annoys me that Michael Parkhurst is a Cranston native (which is the town next to Providence and considered part of the metro area), Jeff Larentowicz is Brown grad, and Geoff Cameron and Borman of New York are URI grads.

None of these players are ever talked about, but Jamie Silva of Boston College, who was passed up in the draft, is considered a local hero. And Parkhurst is on the United States Olympic team. He got a paragraph-long article last week. Wowwee.

If L.A., by comparison, has some of the best coverage in the league, then that’s scary. The Los Angeles Times’ post-match reports on both Galaxy and Chivas USA are generated from Associated Press clippings. I hear that the papers in Orange County write a little bit more on the Galaxy, but when you put “Los Angeles” before your team name, then you would hope the biggest local paper would give you some love. Not so much. The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim get way more coverage, and their stadium isn’t even in L.A. County! Heck, even when the LA Times does print original pieces on the Galaxy, its soccer beat writer, Graeme Jones, uses his small corner in the back pages of the sports section to rip into the team. (Deservedly so, some may say). I feel sorry for Kansas City. I grew up in St. Louis and would much rather see an expansion team land there. Kansas Citizens already have some weird chip on their shoulder for St. Louisans, like St. Louisans have a chip on their shoulder for Chicagoans.

You may have the top 3 right (DCU, NYRB, LAG), but I wouldn’t include Chivas in the mix. Not sure that I agree with you on Dallas, although I am a big fan of 3rd Degree. I think Dallas (Buzz), New England (McCarthy), Toronto (soccer frenzy town) and maybe Houston (Davis), are all on the same level. I think Chicago, San Jose, Colorado, RSL and Columbus are all a notch below. I think Chivas and KC may be at the bottom of the pack. In some markets, including Salt Lake, the clubs are more conservative and tight-lipped about information (which is probably the best thing for the club).
