Finally after a couple months of speculating who would get the call for the 2008 Olympics, the U.S.S.F. handed down the calls ups and list of alternate players.
GOALKEEPERS (2): Brad Guzan (Chivas USA), Chris Seitz (Real Salt Lake)
DEFENDERS (5): Patrick Ianni (Houston Dynamo), Michael Orozco (San Luis), Michael Parkhurst (New England Revolution), Nathan Sturgis (Real Salt Lake), Marvell Wynne (Toronto FC)
MIDFIELDERS (7): Freddy Adu (SL Benfica), Michael Bradley (SC Heerenveen), Maurice Edu (Toronto FC), Benny Feilhaber (Derby County), Stuart Holden (Houston Dynamo), Sacha Kljestan (Chivas USA), Danny Szetela (Brescia Calcio)
FORWARDS (4): Jozy Altidore (Villarreal), Charlie Davies (Hammarby IF), Brian McBride (out of contract), Robbie Rogers (Columbus Crew)
Here are the team alternates, by the way: Goalkeeper: Dominic Cervi (Out of Contract)
Defender: Frankie Hejduk (Columbus Crew)
Midfielder: Dax McCarty (FC Dallas)
Forward: Robbie Findley (Real Salt Lake)
Just as we expected for the most part. Parkhurst, Guzan and McBride get the three over-aged player call ups from Peter Nowak.
Nowak said in his phone conference that guys like Landon Donovan were looked at for this roster but felt that he would be better suited for a stronger World Cup qualifying roster instead of the Olympics.
Any players you thought would get the call that didn’t? I know some Chicago fans were hoping to see Chad Barrett get the call but that appears not to be the case. I honestly like the list of players here. Its a strong lineup of guys that could be a dark horse in this tournament.
