CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying Groups Set

Posted by Drew Epperley under: CONCACAF; FIFA; US National Team; World Cup .

Not a lot of surpise in these three groups for CONCACAF after the end of the early rounds of World Cup Qualifying this past weekend.

The only “surprises” possibly were Panama losing to El Salvador and Guyana losing to Suriname.

Group A
United States
Guatemala
Trinidad & Tobago
Cuba

Group B
Mexico
Jamaica
Honduras
Canada

Group C
Costa Rica
El Salvador
Haiti
Suriname

Group B is the toughest. Conventional wisdom says Mexico will get through but some suggest that Mexico could struggle. I’m not all that convinced on them struggling to get out of this group but I wouldn’t be shocked to see them slip a game or two early on.

We all knew well in advance for the most part on the US group. Not real shocker there. I think it should be a good tune up group for the final round of qualifying. I see the US and Guatemala doing well.

Group B is undoubtedly the toughest. Good thing we aren’t in that mix because crazier things have happened. As for Group A, I have to say that as a proud US Soccer fan and someone who has strong ties to Guatemala, I really hope that they both make it through–no matter how it happens. I am pretty sure that Guatemala has never made the World Cup and it would be incredible if they could qualify…

I really would like to see a different type of format introduced to this particular round of qualifying….being a native of TORONTO, who bleeds for the MAPLE LEAF…its not easy looking at the competition in Group B knowing that Costa Rica’s toughest challenge will be from El Salvador….groups like this are perfect tune up’s for teams looking to gain momentum and confidence going into the last group phase.

As for the USA..i think their group will give them a good challenge but the USA will surely overpower their group-mates. These matches will not be cakewalks, yet they will serve as great preparations for the last phase as im sure the Amercian Lineup COULD be juggled around (in search of the best chemistry) should they overrun their opponents early.

PREDICTIONS….
Group A: USA, Guatamala
Group B: Mexico, Canada
Group C: Costa Rica, El Salvador
