- Stadium Talk
Something I think all fans in Major League Soccer would like to see happen. Chivas USA move out of the Home Depot Center and into their own stadium. Apparently the talks are starting up and this club may soon see themselves not having to pay rent anymore to the Galaxy and AEG.
The city of Santa Ana are in talks with the Chivas owners about bringing the club to the city to build a soccer center.
This article from the OC Register on Saturday talks about the possibilities of the Red-and-White getting their own digs. Its at a very early stage but talking about it seems like a good baby step at this point to get this club out of the HDC and into their own stadium.
Soccer club Chivas USA is in talks with city leaders to build a campus of fields and facilities – and possibly a stadium – on the western edge of the city, a team owner confirmed today.
Chivas hopes to move forward with a development plan for the old Willowick Golf Course by mid-summer, co-owner Antonio Cue said during a “State of the City” event today. He talked about building a soccer center, with fields and classrooms, which would host youth programs and academies.
City officials have been talking for months with Chivas USA about building some kind of soccer facility on the Willowick site, possibly even a new arena. The city is working to develop a streetcar line that would run past the site, making it easier to get to.
Cue, the club co-owner, was in the audience for the mayor’s address. Afterward, he said he expects to bring forward a plan for the Willowick site within three months.
“As of today, I’d say it’s too early to call it a whole stadium,” he said. “That should be part of the discussion. But at this point, that’s not a deal breaker, if we do a stadium or not.”
Some people in Santa Ana don’t like the idea while others do.
Again its still extremely early here but its a positive sign that the Goats are willing to explore the possibilities of their own stadium. Its something we’ve been talking about for a long time with this club. They need their own identity and I believe their own stadium for their fans would surely help out.
Judging by the attendance figures, this club does need their own place. They may not draw well in the HDC but many believe they would if they got out of there and into something of their own.
If any more developments comes out surrounding this I will pass it along to you.
