- Steve Marlet, Summer Transfers
I’m sure you Chicago fans will recall the name, Steve Marlet from your preseason updates. Turns out the 34-year-old former French international is on trial with San Jose for the time being. Jeff Carlisle is reporting that the Quakes are bring in different players from week to week and Marlet is currently in camp hoping to break in to the MLS after failing to do so in Chicago earlier this year.
I don’t really recall the reasonings for why Marlet didn’t work out in Chicago. I believe it was a mixture of injuries on his part and the club being some what loaded at his position in the midfield. He spent part of the just-concluded French league season with Ligue 1 side Lorient but was released before the end of the campaign.
If things work out he would be another solid veteran player on the Quakes’ roster. Adding a playmaker in the middle is what this club really needs right now. They’ve lacked a certain creative juice in most of their matches and its possible Marlet could provide that. Time will tell though as this trial is just mostly an evaluation of what San Jose wants to do this summer. They are expected to add two players according to Carlisle.
San Jose is also giving another striker a trial, this time with 23-year old Chris Sanders. He spent the last year playing for the second team of FC Nurnberg, otherwise known as FC Nurnberg II in part of the fourth tier of German soccer.
The kid sounds like a total prospect to me. Who knows if he will really pan out for the Quakes as he hasn’t played much since the winter. His contract with Nurnberg runs out at the beginning of July.
Its trial season folks, expect more clubs to be giving random players a chance here. I wouldn’t expect a whole lot out of most of them though but they are worth mentioning.
