First Round US Open Cup Results

In case you missed your home club or region’s first round game in the 2008 US Open Cup, here are some results to catch you all up. Most of the top clubs won their games, a few had some close calls, and one USL-1 side was upset.

First off, Chicago defeated Columbus in overtime in U.S. Open Cup qualifying to reach the round of 16, and USL2 Real Maryland’s home game was postponed until Friday because of bad weather.

Once I get word on where the eight MLS clubs will be placed in the bracket, I will pass that along to you. Remember the eight clubs get placed into the third round of the C

Here’s what all went down last night:

Hollywood United of the U.S. Adult Soccer Association stuns USL-1 Portland Timbers 3-2. Some in Portland will blame a busy schedule, while others will point to a missed penalty kick by Timbers forward Takayuki Suzuki as the difference maker.

Seattle Sounders downed Arizona Sahuaros in overtime 1-0. Seattle will next host Hollywood United.

Atlanta Silverbacks held off future USL1 side (but current PDL) Austin Aztex 5-4 on penalty kicks.

Miami FC beat Bradenton Academy 4-2, they will face Atlanta in the next round.

Rochester Rhinos had a tough time with USASA opponent RWB Adria. Rhinos won the game 2-1.

Carolina RailHawks were able to fend off PDL side Brooklyn Knights 1-0. The RailHawks await the winner of the Real Maryland-NY Pancyprian Freedoms match, which was postponed.

USL2 side Crystal Baltimore Palace traveled across country to beat L.A. Legends of the PDL by a score of 2-1.Baltimore will visit fellow USL-2 side Harrisburg City Islanders in the next round.

Cleveland City Stars were able to win on the road in a 2-1 victory over the Michigan Bucks (PDL). With the victory Cleveland advances to face the Minnesota Thunder (USL-1) in the second round.

Charlotte Eagles easily handle Clearwater Galactics 5-2
Richmond Kickers takes care of Fredericksburg Gunners 3-0
Harrisburg City Islanders downs Yakima Reds 5-1
Minnesota Thunder beats St. Louis Lions handily 4-1
Western Mass Pioneers blank Boston Olympiakos 2-0
Pittsburgh Riverhounds wins 4-0 over AAC Eagles
