A slow day on the MLS front but I did notice this news earlier today. It was pretty much a done deal from the start but DC has completed its signing of Liberian striker Francis Doe as of late yesterday.
The former Red Bull was waived by the New York club in February and DC stepped up a few weeks back to give the kid a trial. He will be available to play once he receives his visa.
He had two goals and one assist for the Red Bulls last year. Some were a little surprised to see him go from New York but a slow preseason camp was the main reason for the Red Bulls to waive him.
I said before that this was a smart move by DC, who obviously need the depth this season at the striker position. Throw in the way things have gone so far here this season for the Black-and-Red and this makes the deal even smarter sounding.
Doe won’t make instant headlines for the club and probably won’t lead the club in scoring. But I do think he will push some players like Franco Niell and Santino Quaranta. Who knows he may push Luciano Emilio to start playing better here. Either way, he is depth that will be utilized this season and for that I have to think this was a good move by United.
