I usually try to figure out my player of the week and other weekly nods that I want to give out before looking elsewhere but today I wasn’t able to do that. The good news in that is my first choice for MLS player of the week is the one that the league actually went with.
Yup, good ol’ GBS in Columbus (Guillermo Barros Schelotto for those who don’t know) is my week three player of the week. Schelotto scored a goal and tallied two assists in the Crew’s crazy 4-3 win over Chivas USA. GBS got it all started with a PK goal and then later showed his value in the two assists to Alejandro Moreno and Robbie Rogers.
We saw his worth over the weekend and in week one but even more so we saw just how valuable he is to his club when he doesn’t have a good game like in week two against the Red Bulls. Schelotto easily deserved this award this week to help lift the Crew to their second home win of the early season.
Now as for that goal of the week. I’m still sticking to what I thought on Saturday night and that is Sasha Kljestan’s sweet touch of a shot against Schelotto’s Crew. I fully expect to see this on the goal of the year list later on this fall. Right now this may be the best goal of the season. Now if Kljestan can keep his head in the game and not give up silly tackles that result in red cards, then we could see a budding MVP in the making here I believe.
