Tuesday Kicker: Rookie of the Year Hunt

Here’s a wild thought, what rookie has impressed you so far in this young MLS season? Can you name any? Its sort of like how there isn’t a run away club right now in the league.

We currently have no run-away rookie that is grabbing headlines or making other clubs wonder why they didn’t pick that player sooner in the draft when they had the chance.

It’s still very early on but digging through some rookie history (and with some help from Climbing the Ladder) in the MLS we know that there is a good chance a Rookie of the Year winner started or played on opening day (nine of the last 12) this year. Also the rest that were nominated (23 of 26) played on opening day as well. Now three were the exception (Carlos Bocanegra, Rodrigo Faria, and Maurice Edu) to that but what we should expect is a winner to come from a short list of rookies that saw action in week one.

Below is the list of players that have seen actions so far (ones in bold started):

Stephen King (Chicago)
Justin Braun (Chivas USA)
Ciaran O’Brien (Colorado)
Andy Iro (Columbus)
Dan Stratford (DC)
Geoff Cameron (Houston)
Jonathan Leathers (KC)
Ely Allen (LA)
Michael Gavin (LA)
Brandon McDonald (LA)
Kheli Dube (NE)
Danleigh Boreman (NY)
Luke Sassano (NY)
Shea Salines (SJ)
Brian Edwards (Toronto)

So if history holds, the Rookie of the Year will come out of that bunch. And yeah….I honestly don’t see anyone that is head and shoulders above the rest. Now we do have to take into consideration that a few of the top rookies that were selected were injured to start the season (Chance Myers just made his debut last week and Juluis James is about to do the same).

Honestly, I still see it either being Myers or James in the end. We won’t see Patrick Nyarko in Chicago until later on this summer so he is out of the question and I really don’t think anyone from that list above will do the trick. So in my mind James or Myers will end up it unless someone starts to steal the spotlight here on a consistent basis.

Any rookies that you see taking the cake in this award right now? Or will it be one that hasn’t seen a lot of action just yet?

king started over the weekend. you may want to put his name in bold.

I vote Leathers, Jonathan Leathers. Not for anything he's done on the field, mind. But what a name! Let's just say he's the wrong kind of professional.

Adam that list is from week one, not from all weeks. I will add it to the list for the next update in this "hunt" though so thanks for pointing it out!

I though Sean Franklin for LA was a rookie also. If he is, he has impressed as seemingly their 2nd best defensive player.
