Seattle to Vote on Team Name

Posted by drew.epperley under: MLS; News and Rumors; Seattle Sounders FC .

Lovely little email in the Hooligan inbox today from the folks up in Seattle. It seems that it is almost that time for the club to name itself. They want fans to soon go online and vote for some finalist next week between March 27th and the 31th.

Before we can wave the scarves and sing the songs and wear the kit and protest the yellow cards
and win the MLS Cup…
Seattle’s Major League Soccer Team needs a name.
Vote online March 27 - 31 at MLSinSeattle.com.

MLS Rumor seems to think it is down to three names. Seattle FC, Seattle Republic and Seattle Alliance. While they point out that all three are trademarked, I still think there will be more than those three names on the ballot. Mainly we all know these name voting are a little subjective in a way. The clubs want to see if the fans will pick what name they already have set out for the club. Many should remember how the voting went for other past expanion clubs, I believe RSL may be a good example of this.

For a while we thought this club would be called Emerald City Greens but maybe that name is out the window now. I still hope it is on the ballot as it was the name I submitted way back in the fall when the club was announced as the expansion site for next year.

Having this vote can also mean that the owners are still undecided about a name themselves and have yet come to an agreement on a name. Voting could act as a tiebreaker for them.

Honestly if it is down to those three names listed above, then it will more than likely be Seattle FC. I honestly do not like either Republic or Alliance. Both sound like a bad clothing store name that would be found in a local mall.

Here’s to hoping there will be more than those three names and something a little more creative than the usual ‘city-name FC’. However if that is the name we are left with (Seattle FC) then I will take it.

UPDATE: Voting will begin in a few days with the three names listed above:

Fans will be able to vote online beginning on Thursday, March 27 at 12:01 a.m. (PT) and conclude on Monday, March 31 at 11:59 p.m. (PT). Fans can register their vote at www.mlsinseattle.com.

I know where my vote is going…

“Both sound like a bad clothing store name that would be found in a local mall.”

That was my EXACT initial reaction (I actually commented on MLS Rumors saying basically that). They’re just so… stupid. If Sounders and Emerald City are out, it HAS to be Seattle FC.

It was announced yesterday that a “write-in” candidate can be entered as well. Go Sounders!
