Thanks to Ives for the heads up and my source in Columbus for the call.
The Crew has signed Argentine left back Gino Padula, French newspaper L’Equipe reported on Friday.
Padula is a 31-year-old defender who most recently played for Montpellier of the French Second Division. He was once a River Plate product who saw time in England with Wigan, Queens Park Rangers and Nottingham Forest. He hasn’t seen good first-team action with any club in over three years though.
He will add some depth to a defense in Columbus that needs some work still. Most will wonder why the Crew are signing defenders when they desperately need a scorer. Currently they are in talks with a couple players from Honduras, as technical director Brian Bliss is down there scouting as we speak. Goff mentioned that there are no names yet but more than likely it won’t be a big name player but someone who can score. Whether or not that will translate into scoring in the MLS will be the question.
UPDATE: Goff tells us that the two forwards that the Crew are looking into down in Honduras are Jocimar from Motagua and Allan dos Santos of Olimpia.
