A couple surprises to some in Peter Nowak’s US Olympic Qualifying team roster as it was cut down from 24 men to 20.
Out of the five that were cut from the training camp in Florida were Robbie Rogers, Tally Hall, Arturo Alvarez, Mike Randolph and most surprisingly Benny Feilhaber.
Still no Michael Bradley (not a surprise to me, since he is too valuable right now to his club), but Jonathan Spector joins the mix.
GOALKEEPERS: Dominic Cervi (not under contract), Chris Seitz (Real Salt Lake).
DEFENDERS: Hunter Freeman (New York Red Bulls), Kamani Hill (Vfl Wolfsburg), Patrick Ianni (Houston Dynamo), Michael Orozco (San Luis, Mexico), Jonathan Spector (West Ham United), Nathan Sturgis (Real Salt Lake), Marvell Wynne (Toronto FC) .
MIDFIELDERS: Freddy Adu (SL Benfica), Maurice Edu (Toronto FC), Eddie Gaven (Columbus Crew), Stuart Holden (Houston Dynamo), Sacha Kljestan (Chivas USA), Dax McCarty (FC Dallas), Sal Zizzo (Hannover 96).
FORWARDS: Jozy Altidore (New York Red Bulls), Chad Barrett (Chicago Fire),
Charlie Davies (Hammarby IF), Robbie Findley (Real Salt Lake).
Overall still a very solid roster that should see it far into the Olympic medal stage. Very MLS heavy as you should note. Hopefully these guys come back to their MLS clubs with loads of confidence and experience being on the national team side of things again.
Lord knows Chicago is hoping Chad Barrett learns to find some scoring ways on this round of qualifying and continue that once the season kicks off later this month.
Your thoughts on the 20-man roster that Nowak set? Good? Bad? Surprises to you?
More coming today…should have a Colorado season preview for you all…also some other news…
