A fair amount of talk up north today that Toronto FC is looking to deal the oft-injured Ronnie O’Brien. Some are saying that the expansion side San Jose will be the trade partners for O’Brien in this deal. No word on what Toronto would get in return other than allocation or draft picks.
Its probably best for both sides really because with the knee injuries that O’Brien has had over the years, another full season on Field Turf cannot be good for him. San Jose does need some midfield help (badly) at the moment and O’Brien would be an instant upgrade since he is one of the better flank players in the league when he is fully healthy.
If anything happens I will keep you all up to date with it. The link above seems to think something could happen this week, or even tomorrow for that matter.
I can think of a number of clubs that would love to get their hands on O’Brien right now. San Jose seems to have the allocation in place but don’t be shocked if another club approaches Mo Johnston before anything goes down with the Quakes. I’m sure he’d fit well with Chivas, New York, New England, KC, or Houston. Thing is I don’t know if any of those clubs have something that Johnston is looking for at the moment.
What do you all make of Toronto’s willingness to part with one of their better players?
