Colorado Completes Trade For Gomez

A deal that most of you already know about but thankfully is finally over with today. Colorado acquired the MLS rights to Christian Gomez from DC United.

Gomez signed a two-year deal worth about $400,000 per season. The team holds an option for a third year. The Rapids gave up a first-round pick in the 2009 MLS SuperDraft and future considerations to obtain Gomez’s rights.

And from what I hear there is no allocation exchanged in this deal.

But what are those ‘future considerations’? According to Steve Goff, it could be a designated player spot.

The latest I’ve heard from multiple sources is that D.C. will have the option to use Colorado’s designated player slot anytime in the next three years.

If that is the case, DC got an excellent deal out of this. Also United is probably doing this to help upgrade this roster if they would happen to lose a player this summer or even next winter. I doubt they will go out and sign anyone else to a designated player spot right away but they do have some insurance to be able to in the future.

So who got the better end of this deal? Colorado or DC?
