While we are waiting on a Christian Gomez deal to finish up, one deal has gone down today as Chicago’s keeper Matt Pickens has signed with English side Queen’s Park Rangers.
Surprising deal really considering the Fire had upped their offer from what they previously had offered him at the end of the year.
With Pickens gone, the Fire are a little weak at keeper right now. They have veteran backup Jon Busch, which will more than likely be their number one this season. Also, they have second year development keeper and WVH favorite (due to WVU ties) Nick Noble. The Fire recently drafted Tulsa goalkeeper Dominic Cervi with the No. 12 pick in the 2008 MLS SuperDraft, who hasn’t even signed with the club yet.
Tough break for the Fire really. They get nearly nothing in return for Pickens. Just a hand-shake and a “good-luck.” I don’t see the Fire trading for a more polished backup here though, they will take their chances with Busch and hope that either Noble or Cervi can step up and make a serious push for the starting role from Busch.
Honestly, if they need anything right now it is to sure up the defense in front of Busch, Noble, or Cervi. If they fail to do that, then it will be a long season for the Fire, regardless of how good their offense is right now.
