San Jose’s Potential Trading Partners

Who's This Year's Edu??A whole lotta talk this week about whether or not the San Jose Earthquakes will actually use the number one pick in this week’s draft or trade it away and move down the drafting board. And the more I look at it the more it makes sense for a number of clubs to package a deal for the Quakes to do this.

As much talent there potentially could be in this draft, it is no secret that San Jose boss Frank Yallop sees more value in trading away the number one pick based what I am hearing from the scouting combine in Florida. Yallop isn’t fully impressed with the overall selections in the combine and is looking hard at trading away the number one pick for a valuable veteran player(s).

Plenty of teams want to trade up to get players like Patrick Nyarko and Eric Avila. San Jose does need a quality striker and Nyarko could be that guy if they don’t trade this pick away. But for fun we will look at some clubs that could trade up to that number one spot. Most of these ideas are just guesses that I am just saying aloud here. Disagree with them? That’s fine its all fun right now anyways to speculate and guess. Actual mock drafts could be out later on today or by Thursday.

LA Galaxy – Yallop’s old club could be the most likely trading partner here. The Gals have some veterans that Yallop knows well and would probably want and they have plenty of draft picks that could make a deal worth-while for the Quakes.

A potential deal could be:

San Jose’s number one pick (and probably money) – for – LA’s first round pick (forth overall), a second round pick (probably number 28) and either Kyle Martino, Alan Gordon, or Peter Vagenes.

LA definitely needs a quality striker or even another quality midfielder with Donovan and Beckham. If the Gals stay here I could see them end up with a guy like Pat Phelan from Wake Forest. A quality midfielder who can play defense and score.

Colorado Rapids – One club that you really should keep an eye out for on draft day is Colorado. They don’t have tons of picks like the Galaxy but they certainly have some cash to go around and a high enough pick (number 5) to swap with San Jose.

A potential deal could be:

San Jose’s number one pick (and maybe money) – for – Colorado’s first pick (fifth overall) and Jose Cancela or Jovan Kirovski.

Colorado needs a striker in this draft but at the number five spot the best ones may be off the board by the time they draft. If they don’t trade they could stay there and get Peter Lowry from Santa Clara. Lowry, a forward/midfielder who has shown an ability score goals and set them up. He could also contribute this year if the Rapids pick him, though I wouldn’t be shocked to see him camp on the reserve team all season like they seem to do with their draft picks anymore.

Also, I am still hearing rumblings about a deal involving Pablo Mastroeni during the draft as well….just keep your eyes open for that.

Columbus Crew – This is only going to happen if the Crew don’t land a DP before the draft. Though they could still trade up and get something worked out with a DP after the draft but I can’t see them making this move if they get a DP before. But for fun sake we will pretend that they won’t get a DP before then…

A potential deal could be:

San Jose’s number one pick (and maybe money) – for – Columbus’s first pick (sixth overall) and maybe Andy Herron, Robbie Rogers, or Eddie Gaven.

I have trouble figuring out who on the Crew’s roster would be good enough to trade for in this deal and those three names are the only ones that really stand out to me that could be packaged in a deal. Herron makes the most sense to me for some reason, Rogers and Gaven not as much but more than any other.

Probably will see the Crew stay at this spot and draft a guy like Xavier Balc from Ohio State. Makes sense for the Crew to pick a local guy in the draft. They know his skill level and his combine wasn’t as good as many expected it to be so the Crew could get value at this spot.

Kansas City Wizards – I am throwing this one out there right now in the event that Eddie Johnson does sign with Fulham this week. It would make perfect sense because other than EJ, no one on that Wizard’s roster can score so they will need a scorer from this draft, more importantly a good one. Also the Wizards have plenty of picks to trade in the second round so a deal could work itself out.

A potential deal could be:

San Jose’s number one pick (and maybe money) – for – Kansas City’s first pick (11 over all) and a second rounder (probably number 25) and Jose Burciaga Jr., Ryan Pore, Nick Garcia, or Jack Jewsbury.

OR:

San Jose’s number one pick (and maybe money) – for – Kansas City’s first pick (11 over all) and Burciaga Jr. and Pore or Jewsbury.

Burciaga has been in hot water in KC for a little while and I still see him getting traded out before the season starts and the draft is a perfect place to do so. Either one of those deals kinda makes sense to me for both sides. San Jose gets a couple players out of it, but more importantly a veteran or two depending on how the deal is packaged.

Toronto FC – Its hard to imagine Mo Johnston not making a play for a top pick with the way he deals around this league. He said he probably won’t trade up for the number one pick but he will trade one of his two first rounders. Maybe a deal could be worked though for that top spot.

A potential deal could be:
San Jose’s number one pick (and maybe money) – for – Toronto’s first pick (9th overall), a third rounder (probably number 35) and maybe Todd Dunivant.

Dunivant is really about the only player Mo could and probably would package in a deal for the top pick.

More than likely with the Reds you will see them deal that 10th overall pick. Johnston is one of the best drafters in the league and he’ll find a very good value in guys like Chance Myers (UCLA), Andrew Jacobsen (Cal), or El-Hadj Cisse (North Carolina State).

Lots of deals could happen, I will be tracking them as much as I can over the next couple days. Once I hear something I will pass it along to you all as well. Its always fun to speculate right now anyways, and hopefully some of you out there have better ideas than what I have.

Ouch, I'm glad those are only guesses. The only player I like from all those you mentioned was Todd Dunivant. I especially shuddder at the names: Martino, Vagenas, and Gordon. No!!!
Here's my idea:
Trade the pick to Toronto for Jeff Cunningham and Collin Samuel.

SJ would only get one of those guys from Toronto, not both. Plus Samuel will probably be in Scotland or England in a couple weeks anyways.
