Good Wednesday to you all. Plenty of stuff out there to discuss as the transfer season is in full swing and the rumors are kicking up like crazy here. It looks as though lots of clubs are taking advantage of the new roster rules for signing international players, as most of the rumors that I have seen deal with internationals.
I will start with the buying spree that last place EPL side Derby County is going on here. Obviously it affects the Americans on the roster but it also affects Eddie Johnson in a way.
Derby has signed French left winger Laurent Robert and central midfielders Robbie Savage and Hossam Ghaly. This all leaves the futures of Eddie Lewis and Benny Feilhaber in serious trouble with the club. Derby also signed Argentine forward Emanuel Villa, which could signal the end of the club’s lengthy pursuit of U.S. national team forward Eddie Johnson.
However, I still believe Derby is where EJ is landing when he goes abroad, though Benfica is still not out of the question by a long shot.
Feilhaber could be exiting stage left at any point from Derby if you ask me. I doubt he will come back to the MLS but it wouldn’t be a bad idea for some clubs to make a pitch for him. Honestly, any club in the MLS would be stupid not to give him a look. However more than likely he won’t end up in the MLS but I think Lewis will.
Lewis is at a point in his career that he should come home and return to the MLS. His playing time is not what it used to be and with the new signings it can only mean less time for him anyways. With San Jose back in the MLS it would be a smart move to come home now I think for Lewis.
In other news…
I talked some yesterday about DC United’s peruse of Franco Niell, so far everything looks good on that front for him to join the team on loan. It’s been reported that it’s a $60K loan with an option to buy.
Like I said yesterday, it sounds like a smart move on their part…
Real Salt Lake is in a similar situation with an Argentine midfielder Matias Cordoba. The potential deal is the same kind as the Niell to DC deal. Loan with an option to buy after a year. Sources tell me that a deal is very close to being reached between Argentinos Juniors (Cordoba’s club) and RSL.
Some info on Cordoba, he is a two-way midfielder who has been a bit injury prone from what I gather but he has plenty of upside. It should be a another good Argentine import for RSL.
Ramiro Corrales is said to be possibly moving back to the MLS from Norway. The 30-year old defender/midfielder has seen his fair share of the MLS over the years before his move to Norway in 2004.
Corrales was once one of the league’s youngest players when the league started in 1996. Corrales went from high school straight to the pros and played for San Jose. After that he played a couple games in Miami and New York before going back to San Jose.
Now reports say he is wanting to come back to America to finish out his playing days. Houston still holds the rights to him and I wouldn’t be surprised to see a couple clubs make an offer for him if he does come back.
More on that later though….
Update on Matt Pickens. Yesterday I told you all that he was on trail with Norwich in the Championship division over in England. Apparently, he is out of contract with the Fire now and that is the reason he is overseas.
Both sides are negotiating a deal for him to return to Chicago. It is believed he is asking between $150,000 and $190,000 per season.
But what would the Fire do if he were to leave? I think they’d be in some serious trouble in terms of someone between the pipes. Make Busch is the current backup and while he is a solid backup I wouldn’t want him as my number one if I were a Fire fan.
More than likely they would have to go to the draft boards and grab a keeper early in the SuperDraft this month. But all of this will happen if Pickens and the MLS fail to reach a deal, which I doubt will happen.
Mexican midfielder from Tecos could be making a MLS jump. Said Godínez is being linked to a possible MLS move. No real word about which club since all the reports are in Spanish and this hooligan doesn’t read that very well.
From what I did gather though he is being link to a deal with a club, my guess its either Chivas or Colorado, maybe San Jose as well. Really those are the only clubs I could see making any kind of pitch. Colorado seems like the most likely candidate.
Godinez is 32-years old and plays in the midfield. He has scored 11 goals over the years for Tecos (since 1998).
