University of California, Santa Barbara center-back Andy Iro is weighing his options right now. MLS or abroad?
“I am really open to both options. Obviously, I have a lot of contacts in England from growing up here and there are some opportunities. Financially speaking England would be the better option but saying that, the last four years of my life I have been in America and I am happy in America. I will seriously take a look at what MLS has to offer.
“…I am heading back to America shortly and I will be at the combine.”
Iro is gaining interest in England as well as the MLS based on his history at UCSB. As a member of the Gauchos Iro lead UCSB to the 2006 NCAA National Championship, two NCAA championship appearances, and three Big West titles. He was also named Big West Freshman of the Year (2004), College Cup Most Outstanding Defensive Player (2006), a M.A.C. Hermann Trophy candidate (2006/2007), and various other Big West and All-American awards.
I think any club would love to have a player like Iro on their squad. Seeing him last year as the Gauchos went all the way to a NCAA title, I saw a very good center-back that would be a great addition to any club in the league. Most clubs lack depth at center-back as it is and Iro would easily get attention from each club right now.
Thanks again to Sean for submitting the interview. Feel free to head over there to his site, he is going to be having other interviews with players in the coming weeks.
