Goodson Exploring His Options

When San Jose selected former FC Dallas defender Clarence Goodson in the expansion draft, they knew he would be looking elsewhere in the soccer world while he negotiated with the Quakes and the MLS.

San Jose took the gamble with Goodson, who’s contract ran out after the 2007 season. That gamble may not pay off if a deal with the club and league isn’t reached.

Right now Goodson is exploring his options with clubs in Germany and in the Scandinavian region.

I found it interesting that over on the Soccer Silicon Valley Blog for the Quakes that they throw in the average temperature in Germany during the mid-season and compare it to the average temperature in San Jose during the MLS season. The results were anything less than expected.

Its cold most of the time in Germany and in countries like Sweden and Norway.

Average midseason high temperature in Hamburg is 39 degrees. The lows? Don’t ask.

San Jose – average high temperature in midseason is 80 degrees. It cools down nicely by game time — the average low in July is just under 60 degrees.

SSVB is hoping that those highs and lows help keep Goodson in a Quake uniform this season.

It all comes down to money though. If the league can’t match a good enough offer from a club in Germany, Sweden or Norway you can more than likely expect Goodson to not be with the Quakes next year unless he really hates the cold weather (which is probably unlikely since he never seemed to have problems in cold cities here in the US).

I hope to see Goodson stay in the league because he is starting to become one of the better center backs in the league but if he get a good enough offer then I think he would be wise to take it.
