Post New Years Kicker: Johnson To UK Talks Heat Up

Posted by: WVHooligan In: EPL| KC Wizards| MLS| News and Rumors

Happy New Year to one and all. Good to have a little break from writing on here over the past couple weeks. Not a lot going on around the MLS soccer world just yet in 2008. I know some rosters for National teams came out the other day but by now I am sure most of you have seen them so I will save you the time to not have to read them again.

Anyways, now that it is January, it means only one thing: TRANSFER SEASON!!!!

Yeah I am trying to make it as exciting as possible but whatever. Nothing huge to really dive into. I won’t even waste your time with the popular Figo to MLS again or Landon Donovan to Everton (gotta love BigSoccer sometimes for those kinds of things).

But I did run across this nugget this morning on Kansas City Wizards forward Eddie Johnson. I’ve said for weeks that he would be going to Europe this off-season and some talks about him are starting to heat up even more this time around.

A few clubs seem interested in Johnson’s services, among those interested are Fulham, Manchester City, Middlesbrough, Reading, and Benfica.

Some very interesting names really if you ask me. I honestly see him landing in Reading when it is all said and done. Something about that club just screams like a perfect fit for EJ. Fulham is the ever interesting club due to the fact that they just need to rename themselves to Fulham USA or something strange like that. Manchester City wouldn’t be horrible but would he even get playing time there? I doubt it.

Then with Boro, I really don’t know. I could work there but I honestly don’t know their situation right now well enough to be able to give any sort of assessment on them. And then Benfica, the home of young Freddy Adu. It wouldn’t be terrible to see EJ paired with Adu but just like Adu, I doubt Johnson would get the proper playing time.

Which leads me to believe it will still be Reading. I just see him doing well there for some strange reason. Its my gut feeling really.

Once I hear more I will let you know about it on this situation. Post your comments below on where you think EJ will end up at or if he will still be in a Wizard’s kit at the start of this season.

There may be some more today…keep checking back to see!

I definitely think Eddie J will move abroad, but any club that picks him up will need to play him to see any results. Johnson has always struck me as a pure striker, nothing more.

He can’t take opponents on one-on-one, such as a Torres can, but he lacks the consistency and finishing touch of a Wayne Rooney who can’t take on players one-on-one, but does well making runs into the box to get on the end of crosses and battling in the box to finish a goal.

  • soccer goals: Great article. He does need to improve his form.
  • soccer goals: De Guzman is a great player. TFC would bolster their chances with his acquisition.
  • soccer goals: Crew/United will be a good game.
