DC and Veron Agree To Deal

Let the rumors end about Argentine play-maker Juan Sebastian Veron signing with DC United end. Both sides have agreed to a $3-4 million a year deal that will be signed and officially announced next week.

Tomorrow Veron’s contract with his current club Estudiantes de la Plata will officially run out and he will board a plane to the United States to sign this deal with DC United Wednesday at an introductory press conference.

Since 2006 Veron has been with Estudiantes de la Plata, the team he began his professional career with back in 1994. Veron made 34 appearances and scored 5 goals for Estudiantes since his return to the Argentinean club. Back in the summer he was approached about a possible move to D.C. United but he rebuffed the offer until he met with United officials again last month and expressed his desire to join the club.

This signing will be the league’s sixth Designated Player (well five if you don’t count Denilson), and United’s first.

Again, everything is scheduled to go down next week, I will have more coverage of that as it happens.

UPDATE: It looks as though this is not going to happen like the SI article says. As of right now Veron is not scheduled to be in DC next Wednesday to sign a deal. It doesn’t mean the deal is completely off at this point but things aren’t look as good as they were before. I will post more information as I get it…

UPDATE #2: Looks as though the deal is off and Veron is staying in Argentina. I am not fully sure the details of everything yet but once I do I will let you all know it. As it looks like right now DC is back to square one on getting a DP for 2008, but I still kinda feel it will be Veron.
